Formulation

A balm, not a gel

A balm, not a gel

A conventional styling gel works by drying. Polymers form a rigid film, the hair is locked in position, and the hold you feel is that film resisting movement. It works, and it announces itself: the crunch, the cast, the way hair breaks back into place rather than falling.

02 was built the other way round. The hold comes from a soft wax and butter system carried in jojoba, with agar-agar contributing structure rather than stiffness. The film stays pliable at skin temperature, so hair keeps its shape and still moves.

What that changes in use

Work a small amount between the palms until it turns clear, then through damp or dry hair from the mid-lengths out. It re-forms when you run your hands through it, which is the point: the shape can be adjusted at four in the afternoon without starting again.

The trade

A pliable balm will not hold a sculpted shape against wind and weather the way a hard gel will. It is built for controlled texture and a natural finish, not for architecture. Hold past a certain point costs everything else — touch, movement, the ability to redo it. We would rather the product do one thing at the right level than several badly.
